GIL INSIGHT
Answering "The Big Question"
 |
|
As a society, we're often encouraged to live our daily lives by taking a step back to “look at the big picture.” The old adage forces us to examine the ways in which our actions, experiences and interactions begin to shape and impact outcomes in a larger context. Similarly in the world of business, it becomes equally important for us to step “outside the box” in order to anticipate and respond to the evolving markets and growing opportunities. Our benchmarks for success are weighed against our company’s ability to leverage these opportunities, to drive growth and become more innovative; an infinite art which remains a continuous work in progress.
During 2010, Frost & Sullivan's teams--along with the various members of our Global Growth, Innovation and Leadership Community (GIL)--have traveled the globe exploring various ways in which we can share best practices, tools and strategies, engage each other and inspire new ideas and fresh perspectives. This has led us to focus quite a bit on an area we like to call, “The Big Question.”
Simply put, our industry visionaries, innovators and leaders identify key areas of growth emerging from solutions that address various scenarios which are ultimately becoming global challenges and issues. We’ve begun to identify a systematic approach in which we form these scenarios and have found that opportunities don’t necessarily lie in the total solution, but rather in the stepping stones that bring us closer to this business utopia. These building blocks or “unmet needs” existing within market sectors or industries become the key for new and innovative opportunities that will drive growth.
Some of the questions coming out of the community include ideas like:
1. How can we provide basic education to every single child on our planet?
2. How do we solve the land scarcity problem due to overpopulation?
3. How do we achieve a zero level unemployment rate, globally?
4. How can we begin to standardize basic literacy around the world?
5. How can we escape our dependence (100 percent) on oil?
6. How can we achieve a truly global transportation infrastructure that is efficient, effective and optimized?
7. How do we become a world with zero carbon emissions?
8. How can be become a society completely structured around a remote office infrastructure?
These "Big Questions" range from areas that could be on the brink of becoming reality, to visions of a future that are years away. What makes this unique and even joins us as a community is our individual curiosities and desires to become a more innovative society, at the same time addressing global challenges that impact the ways we live and experience the world.
As our business environments become more complex and increasingly competitive, and our world becomes even more sophisticated, each of us has a responsibility to explore the development of solutions to address these global challenges. This is where I pose the challenge to each of you: to join our global initiative of leveraging innovation as a resource and to proactively contribute your ideas, perspectives and thoughts on each of these subject areas. Only together as a global community sharing, engaging and inspiring one another can we shape a better future for our companies, our careers and our planet’s health.
