John McGonagle on the Risk Management Competitive Intelligence Link

SCIP Philly launched its 2013 program on April 9. We enjoyed a lively discussion led by CI luminary John McGonagle. John’s an award-winning CI veteran with 30 years CI experience, and the world’s most-published CI author. He shared with us a new area of interest — the compelling (but neglected) links between risk management and competitive intelligence.

Risk Management (RM) and Competitive Intelligence (CI) have several points of overlap. Both support business decision-making by analyzing internal and external data, developing response actions, and integrating them into high-level business planning. There should be benefits from cross-fertilization of RM and CI knowledge, approaches, and tools. Unfortunately, the two disciplines often operate in isolation from each other. John’s primary thesis was that RM and CI (and, of course, the business) would benefit from greater awareness and sharing. The remaining presentation was a step in that direction, providing overviews of RM and CI along with tips on how they can support and enhance each other.

CI seeks to provide early indicators of opportunities and threats for a business. It’s typically more externally-focused than RM, and employs skills and approaches potentially useful to RM. Beneficial CI skills include:
  • Generation of competitive perspectives on similar risks
  • Expertise in collecting raw data
  • Analysis of incomplete data
  • Strong external focus
  • Orientation towards on-going (versus sporadic) projects
CI approaches can also enhance RM, such as:
  • Identifying and monitoring external risks
  • Tracking competitors and suppliers whose actions might trigger a crisis
  • Highlighting real-world examples of related crises and how they were handled
  • Setting up alerts and “tripwires” for RM actions
In contrast, RM seeks to identify and mitigate against vulnerabilities, typically focusing on internal systems and failure modes. RM can help CI identify significant new threats or opportunities to be studied. This especially applies to longer-term, pre-emergent RM risks that CI doesn’t usually consider. In addition, RM often has better access to senior management, and can help CI with access and integration.

Nurturing these links can help RM and CI contribute more strongly to business success. This is good for the business, of course, but is also good for CI and its practitioners. The presentation finished in a lively discussion, with John offering his perspectives on data availability issues, CI ethics, and general tips for successful CI. Attendees were also treated to a drawing for a copy of John’s new book “Proactive Intelligence: The Successful Executive’s Guide to Intelligence.” Many thanks to John McGonagle for his generous donation of time, experience, and reading material!

Our next event will be on May 30. We’ll hear from CI expert Craig Fleisher on “Turbo-Charging Your KIT’s.” More details coming soon.
