POINT OF VIEW

Intelligence, Insights…What’s in a Title?

  By Bonnie Hohhof
Director of Competitive Research
SCIP

SCIP members hold various titles in their organizations. Here’s a look at their depth and breadth. Many factors influence an individual’s title: their department, industry, geographic region and language. Going through the titles of the SCIP membership provided an interesting look at their variety and the emphasis placed on specific aspects of their work and position. The appendix provides a look at that variety. Note: I’ve deleted the general titles like manager, director, senior vice president and vice president to reduce space. When you look through the variety of titles, a general pattern emerges. Without much effort you can create the majority of the titles by combining terms from each column in table 1.

Table 1: Creating titles.

The more unusual titles were:

All in all, the diversity of titles is one indication of the breadth of strategic and competitive practitioners and its practice throughout an organization.
