The Brazilian pharmaceutical and drugs industry is ranked second largest in Latin America. A major chunk of the production is domestic. The prices of pharmaceutical drugs are controlled by Brazilian National Health Vigilance Agency (ANVISA) and are extremely sensitive to macroeconomic factors, such as the devaluation of the Brazilian currency that had an impact on the prices of drugs. The generic drug market has been catching up and placing its toll on the price of branded drugs.
